Surveying Cape Cod & The Islands This map is an excerpt from "Sketch A Showing the Progress of the Survey in Section No. 1 from 1844 to 1881"	Detail of Map near Martha's Vineyard Here we see the sight lines and control points used by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey as the accurate mapping of the seacoast and interior of Massachusetts was progressing. This was to improve upon the original 1844 surveys by Simon Borden.
