This DVD
contains scans of the earliest United States
Geological Survey topographic maps of Maine. There
are 189
separate maps. They were originally issued
in the period 1891-1958. USGS maps are arranged in a
rectangular grid. Each map covers an area of
about 6 x 9 miles (15’ of
latitude and longitude).
An alphabetical file list of maps is
enclosed as is an index map to the state.
The scans are
in JPEG format, resolution 300dpi. You will need your own software to
read these maps. Each filename contains the map name
and the year of the map (and reprint year if
applicable).
For example,
"Allagash_1930_1957.jpg" is
the Allagash
quadrangle,
issued first in 1930, and reprinted in 1957.
All of the maps on the DVD are
available
here online for free as well. The online images
are "downsized" for faster download and viewing.
So why buy the DVD? It's
very convenient to have them all easily accessible,
and the DVD has high resolution images, 300 dpi,
which allows you to print your own high-quality closeup of any map.
