This Vermont map is an excerpt
from a much larger map of New England which was probably
commissioned by the US Congress. The author, David Burr is listed
here as "Geographer to the House of Representatives" and "Late
Topographer to the Post Office".
The
special value of this map is that it distinguishes all the main
roads with their mileages between villages. The legend characterizes
the best roads as suitable for "Horse, Mail, Post and Coach", while
the third category is for "Horse, Mail or Sulkey".
