Rutland Area in 1796

This excerpt shows the Rutland area in 1796.  Maps of this early period show only a few details. The roads shown are the main roads, and the mill sites - here identified by owner's name - are presumably the largest in the town. The date beneath the town name is the town's charter date - when the town was first created as such. Note the error on Killington Peak - today we know that Mt. Mansfield is the highest summit in Vermont.
